Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and anticipate tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released messages showed that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's determination to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization commented.
Political Context
This news comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its records on Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has said he intends to sign the bill, after modifying his stance on the matter following pressure from his supporters.
Message Details
A collection of financier-linked emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently included multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The messages revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to connect the official to notable international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, the former official stated he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in communicating with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to restore trust and mend connections with the individuals closest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He presided over the institution from five years and remains a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in DC where Summers was a prominent member, announced that Summers was ceased to be associated with the group.
Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
