Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
